Be Careful: 5 People Rescued

Five people were rescued over the weekend when surprise stormy weather descended on Mt. Shasta and its surrounding areas, catching climbers and recreationists unaware.

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 11, weather turned from sunny to stormy and visibility was reduced to zero on the upper slopes of Mt. Shasta, according to Jamie Lynch, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department.

The Sheriff’s Department and the US Forest Service received reports of a two climbers missing at two separate locations on Saturday, including Christian Taylor, 26, of Redding and Lonnie Richards, 46, Auburn, Calif. were reported missing by other climbers above the 10,000 foot level.

While the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Forest Service personnel, and the California Highway Patrol Air Operations Unit were searching for the lost climbers, additional reports of others reportedly lost on or near the mountain came in, Lynch said.

Two men, Noveen Maltalingen and Pradeep Janakiramen were reported by companions to be missing while snowshoeing above Bunny Flat, as well as Will Metcalf, who was lost and immobilized in deep snow near Harris Springs north of Bartle.
